CBI re-registers Armstrong murder case, visits Chennai crime scene

On August 15, 2026, a CBI team visited the crime scene in Chennai after re-registering the murder case of BSP Tamil Nadu president K. Armstrong, who was hacked to death on July 5, 2024. The Madras High Court had on September 24, 2025 ordered the transfer of the case to the CBI and quashed the 7,411-page chargesheet filed by the Greater Chennai Police. The Supreme Court initially stayed that order but later allowed it to stand after the state government withdrew its Special Leave Petition.

Armstrong's brother K. Immanuel had petitioned for a CBI probe, alleging the local police failed to properly investigate. The CBI's Special Task Branch is now investigating the case, and the court has directed the agency to step in as the investigating authority. The agency has re-registered the case and begun its probe.
