Bengaluru may charge Rs 25,000 for parking car on public road

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has proposed a draft regulation, Parking Rules-2026, that could require residents to pay an annual 'road rent' to park their cars on public roads in front of their homes. Under the draft, the fee would vary by vehicle type: Rs 15,000 for a small hatchback, Rs 20,000 for a sedan, and up to Rs 25,000 for an SUV or sports car.

The permit would only be issued to specific individuals for specific vehicles for one year, and only for homes that lack built-in parking as per building norms. Cars parked on the road despite having off-street parking would face strict penalties. The draft also mandates that the road must be at least 6 metres wide with 1.8 metres of footpath space on each side.

The GBA says the rules are still in the draft stage and a final decision will be taken after public feedback and departmental suggestions. Officials expect a final decision within two weeks.
