BMC panel approves Century Mill lease, Mulund land, petrol pump

The BMC's improvements committee on Friday approved leasing 6.17 acres (ET) or 16.7 acres (HT) of Century Mills land in Lower Parel to Peddar Realty Ltd for 30 years, with an option to extend by another 30 years. The land was originally leased to Century Spinning in 1927 and reclaimed by the civic body after litigation. The developer must rehabilitate 476 tenements of mill workers' families, each at 405 sq ft, at its own cost.

The committee also cleared leasing 15 acres of the defunct Mulund dumping ground to Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd, an Adani Group-led venture, for a casting yard and RMC plant for the Dharavi redevelopment project. A third proposal changed the reservation of a 4,247.5 sq m plot in Mulund east from a sports complex to a petrol pump, citing resident demands.

Opposition from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress corporators marked the decisions. ET reported that after the Century Mills proposal was cleared, Sena (UBT) corporators Sachin Padwal and Vitthal Lokre tore up copies of the proposal. HT noted Congress corporator Meher Haider urged rejection of the petrol pump change, but the committee approved it.
