Calcutta HC to hear Tulu Mondal; Rs 12.84 lakh, gold seized

The Calcutta High Court on Friday agreed to hear on Thursday a plea by stone trader Tulu Mondal seeking quashing of criminal cases against him, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi told the court, livelaw.in reports. The court allowed Rohatgi's request to appear physically and argue the matter.

The plea comes as police intensify a probe into Mondal's assets. In a related development, police arrested Saigal Hossain, a former bodyguard of TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, in Birbhum on Sunday, the Economic Times reports. Police seized Rs 12.84 lakh in cash, around 800 grams of gold, over 150 land deeds, a laptop and foreign currencies from his flat. A Siuri court remanded Hossain to seven days' police custody. Hossain told the court he was framed.

The investigation has uncovered assets worth over Rs 150 crore allegedly linked to Tulu Mondal, including cash, gold, vehicles and property. Police have frozen bank accounts containing around Rs 93 crore. The matter is listed for hearing on Thursday.
