Delhi CM Rekha Gupta launches Heritage Clubs in 75 schools

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday launched Heritage Clubs in 75 CM Shri government schools, aiming to give students hands-on exposure to the capital's history beyond textbooks. The clubs will organise heritage walks, visits to museums and archives, oral history projects, documentary-making, quizzes, and competitions. The Art, Culture and Language Department and Delhi Archives will implement the year-round activities.

Gupta said the programme would help children understand their roots and identity. She questioned why school history had focused largely on the Mughal period, arguing that students should also learn about Delhi's links to the Mahabharata, the Marathas and the Sikh Gurus. The Times of India reports Gupta said several aspects of the city's history had not adequately reached younger generations and the clubs could help bridge that gap.

At the launch, India Today reports Gupta criticised what she called a 'slavery mindset' and cited the renaming of Aurangzeb Road to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road in 2015 and of Mughal Gardens to Amrit Udyan. Education Minister Ashish Sood said it was important to familiarise students with Delhi's history and freedom struggle.
