इंडियन जर्नल ऑफ मेडिकल रिसर्च में प्रकाशित एक नए अध्ययन में पाया गया है कि भारतीय जेलों में 51 प्रतिशत कैदियों ने नशीली दवाओं के दुरुपयोग का इतिहास बताया। शराब उपयोगकर्ताओं में से लगभग 32 प्रतिशत गिरफ्तारी से पहले महीने में रोजाना पीते थे। सर्वेक्षण में 11 प्रतिशत गांजा उपयोगकर्ता और 7.2 प्रतिशत अफीम उपयोगकर्ता भी पाए गए।
