India envoy hopeful of Bangladesh PM’s early visit despite strain

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has expressed hope that Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to India will take place "much sooner," despite fresh tensions over Dhaka's demand for the extradition of deposed leader Sheikh Hasina. Speaking at a dinner in Dhaka on Sunday, Trivedi said differences between the two countries can only be resolved through dialogue.

Trivedi described both Rahman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "people's persons" and said that when the two leaders meet, no issue would be left unaddressed. He acknowledged that the two sovereign nations have differences and need space to pursue their interests. "My very objective is to have a golden period between India and Bangladesh," Trivedi said, as reported by the UNB news agency.

The remarks came amid uncertainty over Rahman's proposed visit for the BRICS summit on September 12-13. Earlier, Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesperson A K M Shahidul Karim had said a "propitious environment" needed to be created for the trip. Relations soured after Hasina's virtual media interaction from New Delhi on August 5, which Bangladesh said hurt its people's sentiments. India's external affairs ministry said it had no role in that event. Hasina was ousted in August 2024 and sentenced to death in absentia in Bangladesh in November 2025. Dhaka's extradition request remains under examination, New Delhi says.
