Mealamu gifts personalised jerseys to Kohli, Gill and Rohit in Auckland
The Story in Brief
All Blacks legend Keven Mealamu presented personalised jerseys to India captain Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma before the first ODI in Auckland on Wednesday, 4 November. Mealamu, who won the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015 and earned 132 Test caps, told the trio in a BCCI video that he wanted to share ‘Mana’, his people’s word for respect and energy.
The first ODI at Eden Park began with a 10-minute rain delay but no overs were lost. India, who won the preceding T20I series 3-2 under Shreyas Iyer, elected to bowl first after winning the toss. India have not won an ODI in New Zealand since February 2019. The five-match series continues in Wellington on 7 November and in Hamilton on 10 November, followed by two matches in Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November, then a two-Test series from 19 November.
Update, 4 November 2026: Deccan Chronicle now also reports the jersey presentation by Keven Mealamu to Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma before the first ODI in Auckland on 4 November. It quotes Mealamu’s ‘Mana’ remark and notes the rain-delayed start, matching the facts reported earlier by OpenTheMagazine, Crictracker, NDTV and Orissa Post.
Indian Opinion Analysis
All five sources report the same event factually: Keven Mealamu presented personalised jerseys to Gill, Kohli and Rohit before the rain-delayed first ODI. OpenTheMagazine adds biographical detail and lists series records, while Orissa Post and Deccan Chronicle quote Mealamu’s ‘Mana’ remark and note Kohli and Rohit’s retirement from Tests and T20Is. Every outlet treats the gesture as a respectful cross-sport welcome, no source editorialises or diverges from neutral wire-style reporting. The uniform coverage confirms that this is a ceremonial pre-match moment, not a controversy or political story. The series moves to Wellington on 7 November.
