Maharashtra allows homoeopaths with CCMP to prescribe modern drugs

In early August, the Maharashtra government directed the Maharashtra Medical Council to begin conditional registration of homoeopathy graduates who have completed the one-year Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP), allowing them to legally prescribe modern medicines within their training scope. The move followed the course's introduction by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences to train BHMS graduates in modern pharmacology and selected medicines.

The decision drew immediate backlash. Resident doctors protested, and the Indian Medical Association threatened nationwide action. Sections of the homoeopathic profession also expressed reservations about the initiative, which raises broader questions about professional boundaries and patient safety when moving between medical systems founded on different principles of diagnosis and treatment.
