Petros, Vainio break European marathon records in Birmingham

Germany's Amanal Petros and Finland's Alisa Vainio won the men's and women's marathons at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, both setting championship records. Petros, the Olympic silver medallist, clocked 2hr 09min 11sec to beat Belgian Koen Naert's 2018 mark by 40 seconds. Vainio finished in 2:22.26, almost three minutes faster than the previous record set by France's Christelle Daunay in 2014.

Italy's Pietro Riva took men's silver in 2:09.18, just ahead of Ethiopian-born Israeli Gashau Ayale. In the women's race, Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth ran a personal best of 2:27:21 for silver, while Britain's Abbie Donnelly claimed bronze. Israel won the men's team gold, with Germany and France following. Britain topped the women's team podium, ahead of Italy and Spain.
