PIL in Supreme Court seeks proper probe into Jantar Mantar FIRs

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court by L Ramanathan seeking a proper investigation into the FIRs registered by Delhi Police after the July 20 Jantar Mantar student protest. The petition impleads Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke and advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi as respondents. The protest, called by CJP, was against NEET paper leaks and alleged irregularities in the education system.

Following the protest, Delhi Police registered multiple FIRs against students and others over alleged violence. After public outrage, the Supreme Court on August 3 clarified that authorities may close or withdraw FIRs against students, a pre-condition agreed by the Union during negotiations with CJP leaders. The petitioner argues that police, like the judiciary, is sovereign in law and order and investigation, and that no interference is allowed unless the police act contrary to law.

The plea seeks a direction to the Union, Delhi Police Commissioner, and Delhi government to ensure that the investigation is conducted independently, fairly, and according to law. It also raises concerns about routine interim directions that restrain ongoing police investigations, saying this creates a constitutional issue.
