India, Bangladesh discuss Tarique Rahman’s possible visit next week

India and Bangladesh are in talks for a bilateral visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman late next week, official sources said. The trip, likely between August 21 and 25, would be his first to India since taking office. PM Narendra Modi had invited Rahman for a bilateral visit and also for the BRICS summit outreach session in September.

The Times of India reports that the visit could help reset ties strained over issues including the extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina. Other topics likely to be discussed include border management, trade, visa normalisation, and water-sharing. For India, security concerns such as insurgent activities, protection of minorities, and Dhaka's potential tilt towards China and Pakistan remain key.

Ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said invitations have been extended and updates will follow. Diplomatic sources said senior officials are discussing a window between August 20 and 25. An engagement before August 28 is also being explored.
