Thousands bid farewell to Bonnie Tyler in Swansea

Thousands of fans lined the streets of Mumbles, Swansea, on Friday as Bonnie Tyler's coffin was brought back to her former home in Wales. The coffin, draped in the Welsh flag, was carried along Newton Road. Fans threw flowers on the hearse and sang her signature hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart". The singer died unexpectedly on July 8 in Portugal, aged 75, following complications from emergency intestinal surgery, the Times of India reports. Deccan Chronicle adds that her real name was Gaynor Sullivan and she divided her time between Portugal's Algarve and her Victorian home near Mumbles.

Fans travelled from across Britain and abroad. Michael Bone and Alan Hawkins came from Derby, while others reportedly travelled from Austria, according to Deccan Chronicle. Among the crowd was 18-year-old Carys Edwards, who called Tyler "an inspiration to everybody". Former prime minister Keir Starmer described her as an "iconic figure".

A celebration of her life will be held at Swansea Minster on Monday, August 17. The invitation-only service will be broadcast on a large public screen at nearby St David's Square. Afterwards, her coffin will travel through her home village of Skewen before a private family gathering.
