Assam flood deaths reach 99, 12 districts hit, 1.47 lakh affected

The Assam flood death toll has risen to 99, with 147,376 people affected across 12 districts, according to the Assam Flood Report released on August 8. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System said 460 villages across 30 revenue circles are affected, including Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat and Sivasagar. Floodwaters have submerged 10,599.89 hectares of crop area, and 324 houses have been damaged, mostly in Sivasagar. Authorities have opened 53 relief camps and 41 relief distribution centres, sheltering 8,568 people. Golaghat is the worst-hit district with 61,735 affected, followed by Sivasagar with 43,492.

Separately, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Mangaldoi on Saturday after the Bhutan-fed Noa River breached an embankment, inundating several villages. The Assam Tribune reports that 12 families are in a relief camp in Golaghat's Sarupathar subdivision after the Dhansiri River rose, while the river is flowing above the danger level at Golaghat and Numaligarh. Rescue operations continue, with 140 people evacuated by boats and helicopters.
