Bangladesh thrash Australia in Darwin for first Test win on home soil

Bangladesh secured their first Test victory on Australian soil on Sunday, beating top-ranked Australia by nine wickets at Darwin's Marrara Oval. The visitors bowled Australia out for 284 in their second innings, needing just 57 runs to win. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five wickets in Australia's second innings, while Cameron Green's 104 was the only major resistance for the hosts.

The win is only Bangladesh's second Test victory over Australia, following their maiden win in Dhaka in 2017. The Times of India reported that former India captain Virat Kohli's words in 2019, after a pink-ball Test in Kolkata, had fuelled changes in Bangladesh cricket, including improved contracts for Test players and a focus on fast bowling. NDTV reported that the victory boosted Bangladesh to No. 4 in the World Test Championship standings with a PCT of 66.67. Australia retained the No. 1 spot with a PCT of 77.77.

The defeat is a major setback for Australia, who now face pressure to make changes before the second Test in Mackay, Queensland, starting August 22.
