Zepto worker assaulted after language dispute in Bengaluru

Police have detained four people, including two women, for questioning after a 25-year-old Zepto delivery agent was abused in Hindi and assaulted with a wooden stick in Bengaluru's Yelahanka early on Saturday. The victim, Basavaraj, told police he was returning from a delivery at 4.30 am when some women began abusing him in Hindi. When he said he did not understand Hindi and asked them to speak Kannada, the women allegedly called two male acquaintances and the group attacked him with a stick on his back, head and nose. Basavaraj, who is pursuing a B.Ed degree, had called his friend Ashok for help, but Ashok was also assaulted, Siasat reports.

Police registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and criminal intimidation. The Yelahanka New Town police are examining CCTV footage and investigating allegations that the women had consumed alcohol. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike leaders have visited the police station demanding strict action.
