Fasting activist Mahto stopped from Tiranga Yatra in Ranchi
The Story in Brief
Fasting student activist Devendra Nath Mahto clashed with police at Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital on Saturday after officers stopped him from joining a Tiranga Yatra at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. Mahto, who has been on hunger strike since August 2, claimed he suffered a chest injury during the pushing and shoving and was undergoing treatment. He was hospitalised after his health deteriorated during a student march to the Jharkhand Assembly.
Mahto and supporters are protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. ABP Live reports that Chief Minister Hemant Soren has promised transparent examinations and changes to the system. Mahto demanded written proof if doctors had advised him not to leave the hospital.
The Indian Opinion
The easy story is that police sought to silence a protester, while the opposing version may portray a fasting activist as recklessly defying medical advice. Neither claim is established by the available account. The immediate test is simple: release the hospital’s written advice, preserve the video, and publish the findings on the alleged chest injury. The larger dispute will turn on whether the promised transparent recruitment process produces credible examinations and redress for affected candidates.
