India aims to transform agriculture by 2047 with tech focus

India's agriculture sector is set for a major transformation under the Viksit Krishi and Samruddh Kisan vision for 2047, focusing on protecting the current season, reducing long-term vulnerability, and restructuring farming. The 2026 monsoon posed challenges with a 40% rainfall deficit in parts of the country and 315 vulnerable districts, but preemptive contingency plans and real-time monitoring helped narrow the deficit from 33% to 24% by early July.

To secure inputs, the government has made 192 lakh quintals of seed available against a requirement of 173 lakh quintals, with a National Seed Reserve of 1.75 lakh quintals. Fertiliser supply is adequate despite global pressures. A renewed Soil Health Card programme and a mobile app for on-field nutrient assessment are being launched. The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is deploying scientists to fields, aiming to place cutting-edge technology in the hands of 100 million farmers by ICAR's centenary. The focus is also on natural farming, with over 20 lakh farmers adopting traditional inputs like Jeevamrit.
