Pulses acreage near last year level, imports dip 1.46%

India's total pulses acreage stood at 108.14 lakh hectares as of August 14, marginally lower than 108.49 lakh hectares a year ago, according to government data. While tur and moong acreage have fallen 4% each due to deficit rains in Karnataka and Maharashtra, higher coverage in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat and Andhra has offset the decline. IPGA secretary Satish Upadhyay said shortfalls are not a concern due to ample stocks, including 1.2 million tonnes with the government.

Separately, pulses imports in the first half of 2026 fell 1.46% to 31.80 lakh tonnes from 32.27 lakh tonnes a year ago, as per DGCIS figures cited by IPGA. Tur imports rose 43.34% to over 5.05 lakh tonnes, led by Mozambique. Masoor imports surged 51.58% to 9.63 lakh tonnes, with Canada as top supplier. Chana imports dropped over 45% due to lower domestic prices, while urad imports fell 19%. Yellow pea imports rose 17%.
