Six-point plan, Rs 1,000-crore push for Yamuna clean-up

A six-point action plan to tackle froth in the Yamuna and a separate Rs 1,000-crore package for sewage infrastructure were announced this week, with both initiatives emerging from meetings chaired by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

As per Hindustan Times, the action plan proposes redesigning the Okhla barrage to reduce turbulence that triggers froth, stopping solid-waste dumping and untreated industrial discharge, removing floating vegetation, shutting dhobi ghats, and increasing the river’s environmental flow to at least 23 cubic metres per second. The irrigation and flood control department, MCD, DDA and Delhi Jal Board have been assigned specific tasks.

Separately, Millennium Post reports that the government approved projects worth over Rs 1,000 crore, including 12 new decentralised sewage treatment plants under the AMRUT scheme in the Najafgarh region, a capacity upgrade of the Keshopur STP, new rainwater harvesting structures, and rehabilitation of a trunk sewer line. Officials said the measures aim to stop untreated sewage entering the Najafgarh Drain and improve water supply in unauthorised colonies.
