Six dead, including suspect, in Michigan shootings; girl survives

A teenage boy and four adults were killed in shootings in rural Michigan on Friday, with the gunman's body later found in woods alongside one of his victims, police said. A 13-year-old girl survived and was in stable condition. Michigan State Police identified the suspect as Chad Hickman, 39, found dead after a search in Missaukee County.

Police found the bodies of a 16-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman at a home about 170 miles northwest of Detroit. They then found a 53-year-old man at a second home, and a 29-year-old woman dead with Hickman in the woods. All died of gunshot wounds. Lieutenant Ashley Miller called the situation heartbreaking and said the investigation is ongoing.

Court records show Hickman was convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse and sentenced to a year in jail. Felony assault and criminal sexual conduct charges were dismissed in the same case. A neighbour said Hickman had harassed him and his wife. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was monitoring the situation and offered thoughts to the victims, their families and the community.
