5 Shot At Virginia State University, 1 Critical

A shooting involving multiple suspects left five people wounded at Virginia State University early Saturday, prompting a campus lockdown that lasted until morning. County police said officers responded near the Quad Annexes just before 1:30 am. One victim initially listed with life-threatening injuries has been upgraded to critical condition. The other four suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The university confirmed multiple suspects are being sought. A large law enforcement presence remained on campus as the investigation continued. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office are assisting. The campus is a historically Black university in Ettrick, Virginia, about 24 miles south of Richmond. Classes are set to begin on Monday, and many students had just completed orientation.

County police and university officials said more information would be released later in the day. The investigation is being led by local police.
