Sukhbir Badal injured in kirpan attack at Nanded gurdwara

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal suffered an injury to his right hand after a man attacked him with a kirpan at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur near Nanded on Thursday. Security personnel overpowered the attacker, who was detained by police. A security officer was also injured. Badal was taken to a private hospital, received stitches and was reported to be stable and out of danger. The Federal, citing NDTV, said the attacker tried to stab Badal in the stomach. Times of India identified him as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, while Hindustan Times said his identity had not been officially revealed.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the incident and sought details from the Nanded Superintendent of Police. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Badal’s wife, SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, to ask about his health. The attack occurred during Badal’s three-day visit to Nanded with his family. It was his second reported attack in less than two years. In December 2024, he survived a shooting attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
