Supreme Court to hear Tamil Nadu plea on Cauvery water on Thursday

The Supreme Court will hear on Thursday the Tamil Nadu government's plea seeking directions to Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water per day for 15 days from the Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagara reservoirs. Senior advocate CS Vaidyanathan mentioned the matter urgently before Chief Justice Surya Kant, who agreed to list it. The state moved the top court on August 3 after Karnataka failed to comply with the Cauvery Water Management Authority's July 30 order. The DMK, the opposition party in Tamil Nadu, has also filed a similar application.

The Hindu reports that July 2026 was the worst month in 50 years for Tamil Nadu's Cauvery water realisation at Biligundulu, just 0.698 tmcft against the stipulated 31.24 tmcft. The state calculates it has received only 3.687 tmcft by August 2, against the 40.43 tmcft due under the tribunal's award. Karnataka has argued it needs to retain water for its own needs, including Bengaluru, and faces a weak monsoon.
