19-year-old arrested after Virginia State University shooting injures five

Chesterfield County Police arrested Camron Harris, 19, on Saturday after a shooting at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, left five people wounded. Harris, who is not a student, was found hiding in a dormitory closet. Hindustan Times reports that four of the injured are also not students; the only student injured, a 20-year-old male, has been released from hospital. Victims range from 17 to 23, with one 21-year-old in critical condition.

Police obtained eight felony warrants for Harris, including malicious wounding and firearm use. No motive has been given. The university initially said multiple suspects were being sought, but police have not updated that search. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the Quad Annexes, just as residence halls had reopened and classes were set to resume on Monday. The university said its safety measures remain a priority, and an earlier lockdown has been lifted.
