Airport divorce trend lets couples avoid travel friction at terminal

A travel trend called 'airport divorce' is gaining attention, where couples separate at the airport to enjoy independent time and avoid disputes over differing travel styles. British travel journalist Huw Oliver first proposed the idea in a 2025 Sunday Times article.

The concept suggests that partners part ways upon arriving at the airport and meet again at the departure gate, with some opting to travel separately as well. Oliver cited a 2023 British Airways survey in which about 54 percent of participants admitted their personality changes at the airport, according to Economic Times.

Proponents argue that airport time can test couples more than stressful home situations, as security lines, gate changes, and hunger amplify tension. The trend is presented as a buffer to prevent disagreements before a trip begins, rather than a literal separation.
