MPD 2047: Delhi to get international sports venues in Narela, Dwarka, Rohini

The Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2047 has proposed international-standard sports facilities in emerging growth centres such as Narela, Dwarka and Rohini sub-city, the Times of India reports. The plan builds on Delhi’s existing network of major venues, including Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shivaji Stadium, 23 DDA sports complexes and three golf courses. The gazette notification for MPD 2047 is yet to be issued by the central government.

A key change in the plan is reclassifying sports facilities from 'public and semi-public' land use to the recreational category. Former DDA planning commissioner Sabyasachi Das welcomed the move, saying it allows authorities to define non-sports uses while retaining green space. The plan also increases the permissible commercial component from 5% to 10-25% of the utilised FAR, aiming to make large sports facilities financially sustainable. Development norms for community, district and divisional sports centres set maximum ground coverage at 20% and FAR of 40, while international centres will be decided case by case.
